10 Tips: Crowdfunding in a Half Shell, Twitter Power!

Social media acts as the perfect tool for crowdfunding and allows for creative ideas to gain increased exposure and maximise social interaction. You could even argue that social-media made crowdfunding possible (along with the Internet!). Either way, Facebook and Twitter are the most commonly used social media sites harnessed for crowdfunding campaigns; both of which are vital ingredients for any crowdfunding project (and platform).

Twitter recently reached 500 million registered users last month and it is an excellent tool that can be used to sell and share your campaign with thousands of people. However, with so many users, it’s very easy for your tweets to get lost so standing out from other tweeters is crucial.

Whether you’re new to twitter, or have tweeted over 1,000 times, here are 10 tips on how to compose a tweet; how to share it amongst your target audience; and how to get your words of wisdom RT’d as much as possible in the Twitter world.

How to Stand Out

With Twitter it’s all about adding something new to a conversation and making yourself heard. This is why Twitter is such a powerful tool when fighting corruption or just spreading a cool idea. This will increase your follower count and keep them engaged. There will be hundreds of people interested in your field, and just as it’s important that your project stands out from the crowd, it is equally important for you to make your tweets stand out from other tweeters. Here's how you can do it..

#1 Be true to yourself

Too many Twitter accounts are ‘bot-like’: they share links and re-tweet interesting stuff, but they lack a voice. When composing your tweet, be sure to make it personal. If you sprinkle your tweets with your own personal slang, opinions, thoughts and quirks, your account will become an extension of you, and your followers will trust you as a real person.

#2 Be Controversial

If you’re Mr Nice Guy through and through– don’t be! This may slightly contradict tip #1 but nothing stands out more than a bit of controversy.
Everyone loves a bit of scandal. If you’ve got something to say that might raise a few eyebrows, or even might offend, then do it! Don’t be afraid to tweet your controversial opinions on a news story for example, or tweet about anything that might spark a reaction and get your tweet noticed (providing it’s not too offensive). Just make sure you don’t overstep the mark and are prepared to back your case (or back down) if necessary.

#3 Share links with your opinion, and your opinion with links.

In order to stand out from the crowd, it’s sometimes necessary to blend into it first.
 Keep an eye out for growing trends and share links that everyone else is sharing. This way you’re appealing to a wider audience, however rather than simply copy & pasting a particular article title and shortened URL, put your own stamp on it and make it unique somehow. This very much ties in with making a tweet personal. Add in your opinion and think about what your followers would find interesting about that particular article before sharing it.

#4 Ask Questions

Asking questions is a great way to stand out from the crowd (as well as discovering answers to your question). Think of interesting questions (that are related to your project) to ask your followers. An unanswered question just begs for an answer, and people will be compelled to answer (providing they’re interested in the question). This will not only increase your engagement with your followers, but it will also get you noticed by a greater audience.

Maybe even do an interview on Twitter with a supporter. You wouldn't be the first!

#5 Hashtag Everything (Relevant to your #Project) !

In every tweet you send, be sure to “#” words and phrases related to your project and campaign. This makes it easy for random people to find your project on Twitter or through a Google search. ‘#Crowdfunding’ for example will get you noticed by anyone who follows the crowdfunding hashtag. However, be careful not to add too many #tags or else you’ll be at risk of looking like a spammer.


HOW TO GET RE-TWEETED

Standing out on Twitter and getting Re-Tweeted should ideally go hand in hand, or at least you’d hope. However, there are some things you can do to really make sure you get re-tweeted as much as possible. More RTs will make it easier for you to attract new followers by getting more exposure in other people’s stream. This will inevitably drive more traffic to your project.

Here are 5 more simple tips that will help ensure your words of wisdom (and ultimately your project) get shared as much as possible.

#6 Keep your tweets short

“Less is more”. If in doubt, always follow the KISS principle, “keep it simple, stupid.” The more straightforward your tweet is, the more people understand it, the easier it is to get it Re-Tweeted.

Remember to also leave enough free space for your tweet to contain the RT and @username. We suggest leaving at least 25 characters free space.

#7 Send your tweet several times over the day.

Try to spread your tweets out a bit. A single tweet can easily get lost, but Tweet too much and it appears like spam. You can even schedule your tweets with su.pr, but remember not flood your feed with tweets exclusively about your campaign.

#8 Find some twitter users in your niche and re-tweet your followers.

(Some of them will want to return you the favour).
Don’t rely on people just finding you on Twitter; find related tweets and posts by other people and re-tweet them on your account. This way you come off as recommending high value opportunities and thoughtful ideas to your fans and the original poster will (hopefully) then re-tweet or re-post something of yours in appreciation. As a result, you will be reaching their fans and ultimately increasing your audience.
An easy way to do is by creating a new column using TweetDeck with their @username. Check the RTs they receive and follow those people who made the re-tweet. Simples.

#9 Be grateful to people for re-tweeting your tweets.

My father always told me that ‘pleases and thank you’s will get you everywhere’, but I didn't think this could apply to Twitter. A simple thank you will help build a relationship with your ‘RTer’ and will make them more inclined to re-tweet you again. Everyone loves to be appreciated.

#10 And finally…Just ask for a RT!

This may sound like a silly suggestion, but a simple 'please' can sometimes get you just as far as a thank you. Ask your followers nicely to RT you; you’ll be surprised at the response.
